Gap year

Lots of students take a year out between school/college and higher education or between graduating and starting work.  If you decide to take a year out before starting a course, it would be wise to check with your university/college that they will accept a deferred entry application.  To find out what you should do contact www.ucas.com

Students who take a gap year use the time in lots of different ways but the important thing is to use the time constructively as this is something you could include on your c.v. when you eventually apply for full time employment.

Employment
There are all sorts of options such as seasonal retail work, bar work, unskilled labouring, hotel work, etc.  By undertaking paid employment it can help to save towards your higher education, or finance your travel if you choose to work abroad.

Volunteering
Opportunities exist both in Britain and abroad, and can be particularly useful in building up confidence and learning more about the world of work.

Travelling/working abroad
Some people take the opportunity to work abroad – options include au pair, teaching English, working in a kibbutz or children’s summer camps such as BUNAC and Camp America.

Improving qualifications
Taking a course, such as typing or basic foreign language skills could help to enhance your current skills and also help you in the future. Alternatively you could use the time to pursue a hobby or interest.
