Employment Rights for children and Young People
There are laws governing the employment of children and young persons which are laid down in the terms of a "European Directive on the Protection of Young People at Work".
The term "child" refers to anyone younger than the minimum school leaving age (in England this is currently 16 years)
The term "young person" is anyone over school leaving age but under 18.
As well as the laws that govern all children, local bye-laws can also apply. Information about local bye-laws that affect the employment of young people in your area can be found on the following websites:
www.coventry.gov.uk (Coventry City Council)
www.warwickshire.gov.uk (Warwickshire County Council)

Note: An employer is required to obtain a permit from the Local Education Authority to employ a child. A Local Education Authority has the power to intervene if it feels that the employment is unsuitable for the child or young person.
