STI's

Sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) are passed on through intimate sexual contact.  The more sexual partners you have the higher your risk of contracting an STI. The most effective way of preventing an STI is use of the male condom

If you are worried that you may have an STI you should seek medical help as soon as possible. Visit your local sexual health or GUM clinic (GUM stands for genitor-urinary medicine) for a check up, and treatment if necessary. You should also inform your sexual partner(s) and encourage them to be checked as well.

In the U.K. the number of people being diagnosed with STI’s is rising. The biggest increase has been for cases of Syphilis, Chlamydia, genital warts and herpes particularly among the 16-24 age group.

In Coventry, one in seven young people have chlamydia.   There is a website with information specific to this STI - for details visit www.got-it.org.uk
