Why pick on me?

Bullies are cunning and can work out which buttons to push to upset you the most.  They are also cowardly and will pick on vulnerable people or those they know will find it difficult to stand up to them, for example if you are particularly shy or don't hang around with a group of friends.  It gives them a sense of power and control, and they aim to upset you as much as possible by making remarks about a whole range of things:

• your weight or your looks
• the colour of your hair or your skin
• your schoolwork, this might be because you work hard
• if you have a disability, or wear glasses or a hearing aid
• the fact that you are popular (this often stems from jealousy)
• your family
