What your body needs to stay healthy

 
A healthy diet is essential for overall good health, which is why we often hear the words “you are what you eat”. In order to stay healthy you need to eat a wide range of foods to obtain everything a healthy body requires.
 
Carbohydrates – for energy
Found in: potatoes, pasta, cereals, rice, bread, noodles
 
Vitamins and Minerals – to protect the body from illness
Found in: fruits and vegetables (also in fruit juice)
 
Calcium – to strengthen bones and teeth
Found in: milk, cheese, yoghurt
 
Protein – to build up muscles and repair damaged cells
Found in: chicken, meat, fish, eggs, lentils, beans
 
Fats – for energy (although too much fact can be bad)
Found in: cheese, milk, butter, meats/poultry
(Hidden fats are found in cake, sweets, chocolate, chips, sausage rolls, etc)
 
Sugar occurs naturally in fruits. It is not necessary for a healthy diet but is added to foods to improve the taste. Too much sugar can damage teeth and can also lead to weight-gain.
