What are eating disorders?
I’ve heard about eating disorders, what does this mean?
There are lots of different eating disorders such as bulimia, anorexia nervosa and compulsive eating, which can result in people eating too much or not enough.
People can develop eating disorders for all sorts of reasons, such as peer pressure to be thin, bullying, physical or sexual abuse, problems at school or work, the death of someone close to you, etc. It can happen to anyone, at any age although it is most common in young women between the ages of 15 – 25.
Where can I get help?
Eating disorders can seriously affect your health so it’s important to seek help. Make an appointment with your family doctor to discuss your problem. You may be referred to a specialist professional such as psychiatrist, nutritionist, counsellor or psychologist who will be able to offer you the help and support that you need.
If you feel unable to speak to your doctor, and don’t feel comfortable speaking to family or friends, there are websites you can visit which offer information and advice.
