Classification - the law
Possessing or supplying illegal drugs can lead to a prison sentence - having a criminal record may affect your life as it can be harder to get a job and may even prevent you from taking holidays/working abroad.
Drugs are divided into different classes according to the harm they do. The most dangerous ones are Class A drugs, and these are also the most addictive. The penalty for being caught with illegal drugs varies according to the class of drug and the circumstances.
Class A Drugs
Amphetamines (prepared for injection), cocaine and crack cocaine, crystal meth, ecstasy, heroin, LSD and magic mushrooms
Possession - 7 years in prison and/or fine
Possession with intent to supply - Life in prison and/or fine
Class B Drugs
Amphetamines, methylamphetamine, barbiturtes, codeine, Speed (speed is Class A if prepared for injection), cannabis
Mephedrone - from 16th April 2010, this became classified as a Class B drug, and is now illegal to be sold or possess.
Possession - 5 years in prison and/or fine
Possession with intent to supply - 14 years in prison and/or fine
Class C Drugs
Anabolic steroids, gamma-hydroxy butyrate (GHB), ketamine, methylphenidate (ritalin),temazepam, valium
Possession - 2 years in prison and/or fine
Possession with intent to supply - 14 years in prison and/or fine
